Gum Disease and Deep Cleaning

Overview: Deep cleaning is a precise method used to assist in the treatment of gum or periodontal disease. The Dentist will use specialized designed probe to measure the area around the teeth to determine if pocketing is present. Bacteria can form in pockets greater than five millimeters or more wide. Normal pockets are three millimeters deep, or less, with those greater than five millimeters possibly requiring a deep cleaning. For adults, it is a good idea for this evaluation to be done on a yearly basis.

Procedure: Deep cleaning is also known as scaling and root planning. The scaling portion is a procedure used to remove plaque and tarter from the surface of the tooth. Plaque is also removed from the pocket area between the teeth and gums. Root planning involves the removal of plaque and tartar from the root surface of the affected teeth.

The doctor will likely want to see the patient after the procedure to make sure the pocket depth has returned to normal, and that the gums are becoming healthier.

Patient Info: In the weeks after the procedure, the bacteria in the pockets should be completely removed. If the patient performs consistent oral hygiene, gum health will steadily improve, as a primary reason this procedure takes place is due to a lack of routine cleaning visits. In addition to regular oral hygiene, consistent visits to the dentist every three months are needed. If no improvement is seen by non-surgical scaling and root planning, a visit to the periodontist might be needed.

The team at Smile at Telfair will effectively explain the deep cleaning treatment. We encourage all questions before and after the treatment. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact call Dr. Hussain. Rest assured, your concerns will be immediately addressed.

Dr. Hussain is one of the best dentists I've ever had. She's extremely positive and friendly, and explains any issues and causes before and after a service. It's easy asking her questions and voicing concerns. She has a wonderful staff and admin is very good about appointment reminders and confirmations. It's actually quite a pleasant experience visiting Smiles at Telfair—they beat all the dentist office scares and stereotypes :)

Dr. Hussain and her team at Smile at Telfair were awesome. Went in with some tooth pain and walked out feeling good. Definitely will be returning to finish the remainder of my dental work. Thank you Smiles at Telfair.

Right from the beginning when I walked through the door, every fear that I ever thought I would have coming back to the dentist was dissipated by Dr. Insiya and her staff. They took wonderful care of all my fears. They explained every little thing that I would be going through. Clean office and great staff!

This team is a good group of people/ professionals. The staff is always very informative and we always end up having a good laugh. This is the type of relationship I expect from a neighborhood Dentist. I had brought my Mother who doesn't speak English. The Doctor was fluent in my Mother's language and it brought such comfort to her. And it was very comforting to me as well. Thank You Smiles at Telfair.
