Root Canal
Overview:
A Root Canal procedure is mostly needed when the layer of tooth, referred to as pulp, develops an infection. Tooth decay, injured teeth, and recurring infections are some of the causes of an injected tooth pulp. The patient usually has symptoms of pain/ discomfort that keeps you awake at night, lingering sensitivity to hot & cold, and swelling.
Procedure:
The procedure itself may be performed when the pulp is infected, or if tooth decay is present. Basically, an opening is created at the top of the tooth providing a means for the infection to be removed. The surrounding area will be cleaned and sealed off. The doctor will put a crown on the tooth, which will protect the tooth from damage, and allow the patient to eat and drink with no pain or discomfort.
Antibiotics are usually prescribed to avoid infection after the procedure is completed. Follow up visits may be required to confirm the removal of the infection, and regular brushing and flossing are required as the tooth may be susceptible to decay. The Root Canal procedure is extremely effective procedure.
